Parents Want Home Economics Back in School as Kids Lack Basic Life Skills

More and more parents are complaining that some of the things taught in schools today are not very practical in the real world. And there may be some truth to that as modern students learn how to solve complex mathematical problems, but kids today still lack the skills to cook a meal or do anything that helps them live independently. Of course, some will argue that it's a parents job to teach them these skills, but many argue that schools should teach kids how to survive in the real world. And it makes sense that the school system can do a better job of preparing students today to survive in the world, with schools letting kids decide what school courses to take and allowing them to handle important career and life decisions, they often forget to teach students the simple life skills that can have a huge impact on their everyday lives.

One example comes from a mathematics professor who claimed that many of her students had no idea that after owning a piece of property, they would also have to pay yearly property taxes for as long as they owned the property. The teacher stepped up and added more course material to what she was teaching. Today, students can compose a sonnet of Shakespe but lack the necessary skills to prepare their income tax or handle their basic personal finances. It is safe to say that there is a lack of balance in the education school system. Students are graduating from school without having very much real-world knowledge, and it about time that society as a whole starts to take this seriously.

Teaching home economics is just a way to help resolve some of these issues. The course could also be called Skills for Life class, and it is a class that should be compulsory. With this class, students can learn the knowledge that they need to succeed when they start their own independent lives or families. There is plenty that can be taught in a Sills for Life class. The classes could include time management, cooking, budgeting, and shopping too. Through these school classes, the students can learn how to resolve their weaknesses and better use their strengths, and get better outcomes from all their hard work.

The result could be kids going on to keeping their shopping within an appropriate budget, knowing how to make meals for themselves and others. Some basic economics knowledge could go a long way in helping people to become more independent. After all, after school, these kids will have to make important financial decisions that can affect the rest of their lives and the lives of the families they start. There is a need for academics in school, but skills such as sewing, cooking, budgeting, time management, and more could also go a long way in helping kids lead more successful lives. Home economics used to be a mandatory class in most schools and hopefully, in time it will be implemented again into schools.
